When families reach out to book their newborn session at Tiny Bliss Photography, one of the most common questions I get is — should we include the whole family? My answer is always the same: absolutely yes. Every single time.
A newborn session is not just about capturing your baby in beautiful setups and props — although we absolutely do that too. It is about documenting your family exactly as it is in this fleeting, precious moment. The way dad looks at his brand new baby. The way big sister cannot stop smiling. The way mom holds her newborn like it is the most natural thing in the world. These are the moments that matter most and the ones that go by the fastest.
As a Northern Virginia newborn photographer serving McLean, Fairfax, Tysons, Arlington, Alexandria, Reston, Herndon, and the entire DMV area, I have had the privilege of photographing so many beautiful families during these first magical days. Here is a look at some of my favorite family and sibling moments from sessions at Tiny Bliss Photography.
The Sibling Bond: Something You Can Never Get Back
There is a reason the sibling photos from a newborn session are always the ones that make parents cry the most when they see their gallery. That very first moment between a big brother or sister and their new baby — captured forever — is irreplaceable.

This sweet big sister could not have been more proud. She held her baby brother so gently and that smile says everything — she already knows this is her person. Sibling photos like this are always taken with great care and safety in mind. I guide every child through the poses and make sure every image is as safe as it is beautiful.

Big brothers are some of my absolute favorite subjects. There is something about the gentleness that comes over them when they hold or kiss their new baby sibling that is simply breathtaking. This kiss on the forehead is one of those images that will hang on a wall for decades.

Sisters! This overhead sibling shot in soft cream tones is one of my all-time favorites. The way big sister is looking at the camera with that proud smile while baby sleeps peacefully beside her — this is the definition of a perfect sibling portrait.

And then there are the big kid siblings — and they are just as precious as the little ones. These two teenage big brothers were absolute gentlemen with their brand new baby sister. The love in this image is everything and it is proof that sibling photos belong in every newborn session no matter the age gap.
Mom with Baby: The Most Precious Thing I Photograph

There is nothing quite like a mama holding both of her babies at once. This image captures everything — the exhaustion, the love, the fullness of heart that comes with a brand new baby and a toddler who still needs you just as much. I always make time for these intimate moments during sessions because they are the truest reflection of what this season of life feels like.

And here is the whole family together — perfect, complete, and so happy. These studio family portraits against a clean backdrop keep the focus entirely on your family and are some of the most timeless images I create at my McLean VA studio.
Dad and Baby: A Bond Worth Capturing
Dads often feel like they are just there to support during newborn sessions — but some of my most powerful images are of dads with their brand new babies. The tenderness, the pride, the quiet love — it translates beautifully through the lens.

This moment between mom, dad, and brand new baby is so quiet and so real. I always encourage both parents to be present in the session — not just as supporters but as subjects. These are images your children will look at when they are grown and understand just how loved they were from the very first day.
Outdoor Family Sessions: Northern Virginia's Most Beautiful Backdrops

Not every family session happens in the studio — and Northern Virginia is absolutely stunning for outdoor family photography. This fall session by the lake with those gorgeous orange and red foliage backdrops is everything. If you are looking for a family photographer in Northern Virginia who offers both studio and outdoor sessions, I would love to work with you!

Golden hour family sessions are pure magic. This family of five in white outfits by the water at sunset — I could stare at this image all day. The light, the love, the laughter — this is exactly why I love what I do.
Big Beautiful Families

This family of six made my heart so full. Four children — from teenagers all the way down to a brand new newborn — and everyone came together beautifully. These are the sessions I will always remember. Big families are absolutely welcome at Tiny Bliss Photography and I love the beautiful energy that fills the studio when everyone comes in together.
The Intimate Moments: Just the Two of You

Sometimes the most powerful images are the simplest ones. Mom and dad, all in black, holding their brand new baby wrapped in white against a dark background — the contrast is stunning and the intimacy is everything. These are the images that feel like fine art.

And this one. Dad kissing mama's head while she holds their brand new baby. I did not ask them to do this — it just happened. This is why I always keep my camera ready during the quiet moments between poses. Real love cannot be staged.

The whole crew together — and what a crew! Every member of this family had their hands on that baby and the joy in this image is absolutely contagious.
