One of the most common questions I get from mamas before their Mother's Day mini session is — what do we wear?! And I completely understand the overwhelm. You want everyone to look coordinated but not too matchy. You want to feel beautiful but also comfortable enough to sit on the floor with your babies. You want colors that photograph well but also feel like YOU.
I've got you. As a Northern Virginia photographer who has photographed hundreds of families, I've seen what works beautifully in front of the camera and what doesn't — and I'm sharing all of it right here so you can show up to your Mother's Day mini session feeling confident and photo-ready.
Our 2026 Mother's Day Mini Sessions are April 25 and 26 at our McLean, VA studio. A few spots remain — book yours at tinyblissphotography.com!
The Color Palette: Keep It Soft and Cohesive
For spring and Mother's Day sessions, I always recommend a soft, cohesive color palette over perfectly matching outfits. Think of it like this — everyone should look like they belong together without looking like they ordered from the same catalog.
My favorite palette for Mother's Day sessions this year:
🌸 Blush and dusty rose 🤍 Cream and ivory 💜 Soft lavender 🌿 Sage green 🩵 Light blue
These tones photograph beautifully under studio lighting, complement every skin tone, and give your gallery that soft, timeless feel that never goes out of style.
What to avoid: Busy patterns, large logos, neon colors, and stark white or jet black as your primary color. These can be distracting in photos and pull focus away from the most important thing — your family.
What Mama Should Wear
Mama is the star of Mother's Day — and your outfit should make you feel like it. Here are my two top recommendations for mamas this season:

The Blush Flowy Maxi — This is my number one recommendation for Mother's Day sessions. A soft, flowy maxi dress photographs beautifully in every pose — standing, sitting on the bench, and especially on the floor with your little ones. The movement in the fabric adds a romantic, editorial quality to your images. Look for something in blush, dusty rose, or soft pink. 👉 [Shop this style on Amazon]

The Cream Off-Shoulder Dress — Timeless, elegant, and so flattering. An off-shoulder neckline photographs beautifully and keeps the focus on your face and your babies. Cream and ivory tones are universally flattering and work perfectly with every color palette. 👉 [Shop this style on Amazon]
Pro tip from me: Choose comfort over everything. If you are not comfortable you will not feel confident, and that shows in photos. A dress you can move freely in — sit cross-legged on the floor, spin your toddler around, lean in for a kiss — is always the right choice.
What Little Girls Should Wear
Little girls have the most fun with Mother's Day outfits and honestly I love seeing what they come in wearing. Here are my two top picks for little girls this season:

The Cream Ruffle Dress — A classic for a reason. Cream and ivory tones coordinate beautifully with almost any mama outfit and the ruffles add the sweetest feminine touch. This style works for toddlers all the way up to school age girls. 👉 [Shop this style on Amazon]

The Blush Smocked Dress — Smocked dresses are having a major moment right now and for good reason — they are absolutely precious on little girls and photograph beautifully. A blush or dusty rose smocked dress is the perfect complement to mama's outfit without being too matchy. 👉 [Shop this style on Amazon]
What Little Boys Should Wear
Boys can absolutely shine in Mother's Day photos too — here are my two favorites for little guys:

The Cream Linen Set — A linen shirt and shorts set in cream or ivory is my top pick for baby and toddler boys. It coordinates effortlessly with any soft palette, photographs beautifully, and honestly looks incredibly adorable on little ones. 👉 [Shop this style on Amazon]

The Light Blue Romper — For baby boys especially, a soft blue knit or linen romper is perfection. Light blue coordinates beautifully with blush, cream and lavender tones and photographs so well under studio lighting. 👉 [Shop this style on Amazon]
How to Coordinate Without Perfectly Matching
Here is my golden rule for family outfits — pick one color for mama and build everyone else around it. You don't need to all wear the same color. You just need to all feel like you belong in the same photo.
A few combinations that always work beautifully:
🌸 Mama in blush maxi + daughter in cream ruffle + son in cream linen 💜 Mama in lavender + daughter in blush smocked + son in light blue romper 🤍 Mama in cream off shoulder + daughter in ivory ruffle + son in cream linen set
The key is keeping everything in the same soft, muted family of tones. When everyone is in the same color temperature — all warm creams and blushes, or all soft cool lavenders and blues — the photos feel cohesive and beautiful without being stiff or overly coordinated.
A Few More Tips Before Your Session
Come dressed and ready — there is no changing area at the studio so please arrive in your full outfit including hair and makeup done.
Our sessions include a variety of setups including bench poses, floor poses, and standing portraits. Make sure everyone — including mama — is comfortable enough to sit on the floor and move around freely.
Bring a brush or comb for last minute touch ups and make sure little ones are fed and rested before they arrive. Happy babies make the happiest photos!
